A FORGIVING SAVIOUR

Mar 2:7  “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

In Micah 7:18, the prophet describes God, “Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.”  God is a compassionate God but is also a just God. Only God has the power to forgive sins or to condemn because of sin. N0 human on earth has the authority to forgive sins. It would be extremely presumptuous of any man to lock himself in a closet and take a confession of sin from another person and then to forgive that person of his sin. It must be repeated that only God has the power to forgive sins, Isa 43:25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.” This is the reason why the scribes were so incensed when Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” To them Jesus was committing blasphemy. They understood correctly that only God had the power to forgive sins so by Jesus forgiving this man’s sins, He put Himself in the position of God. Notice what Jesus did next, He said, “But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” Mar 2:10-11 The very fact that Jesus could miraculously heal the man proved that He had the power to forgive sins. And since He had the power to forgive sins, then He is God! There is no other conclusion in this matter. Notice what Peter told the Jews in Acts 5:31, “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.” Further proof as to the identity of Christ is found in Joh 20:30-31 “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”

The logical sequence is that only God can forgive sins, Jesus had the power to perform miracles and forgive sins.  Therefore, He is God!
