BEING IN THE MINORITY

God’s people have always been in the minority. Think about Noah and his family. For 120 years Noah and his family worked building the ark while preaching and warning men of God’s coming judgment. “And did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;” 2 Peter 2:5. Though the ancient world was annihilated, through faith Noah and his family was saved. “Who (the world) formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water” 1 Peter 3:20. A few people of all the nations of earth were saved. Noah and his family were definitely in the minority when it came to being saved. In Genesis 19, God delivered Lot and his daughters from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)” 2 Peter 2:6-8. The Bible tells us that the righteous soul of Lot was tormented by the sinful behavior of the men in Sodom and Gomorrah. The family of Lot was definitely in the minority.

As Christians we often feel like we are in the minority. And we are! We live in a world that despises the truth. Christians are looked at with disdain, all because we choose to live faithfully. “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” John 15:18. We are in good company. Jesus said it hated Him also! The world hated the apostles and had them beaten and often killed. The early church was persecuted. The faithful have always been in the minority and been ridiculed by an unfaithful world. Jesus explained, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” Matt. 7:13. Jesus tells us that the way which leads to life is difficult. It is a road less traveled and full of obstacles. Given a choice the majority will follow the easiest path with fewer difficulties and more fellow travelers. Those who follow the narrow way will find themselves in the minority. Moses warned, “You shall not follow a crowd to do evil” Exo 23:2.
